On Our Way Once More!

Monday 12th January 2015

We’ve just spent our third night in the van and have woken to a dull, wet morning. Dull and wet in Spain I hear you ask? No, not yet, we’re staying on the edge of the New Forest at Sandy Balls Holiday Park before getting the ferry from Portsmouth to Santander on Wednesday. We arrived here yesterday after an easy and uneventful drive down from North London. We had spent two nights at Theobalds Park to spend time with Rich (our son) before heading off for an unspecified period of time.

These two days in London went in a flash. Rich joined us Friday night for dinner and Saturday was spent enjoying afternoon tea at a posh hotel in Cockfosters which was very nice but bordering on the obscene and when you see the pictures below of said tea, you will understand why! It started okay with a selection of delicately cut sandwiches and copious amounts of leaf tea, none of your tea bag rubbish (mum and dad will be impressed!) but then rapidly deteriorated when the plate on the next level down contained the first round of badness! I in my infinite wisdom decided to bypass this particular layer of fruit tart, battenburg cake, macaroon and pot of chocolate moose and progressed straight to the two delicious scones with jam and cream on the bottom layer! This was a good decision as I barely had room for these let alone the other goodies!

The layer I passed on!

It looked delicious as well but I had to save myself what lurked below!

No such problem for John and Rich though who both went through the whole lot and ate my leftovers as well, although I think they were both suffering by the time they’d finished! Still at those prices it was good that nothing got wasted and it didn’t seem the sort of establishment which would provide doggy bags! It was a lovely afternoon only marred by the there being three of us and not four. We were meant to be meeting Rich’s girlfriend Polly but she had been laid low with a horrible dose of flu and was bed bound. The best laid plans and all that……. there will be other opportunities I’m sure, it’s just the way it happens. Anyway get well soon Polly!

When we managed to waddle out of the hotel, we went back to Rich’s flat in Southgate. I don’t think we’ve had a visit yet which hasn’t included fixing things! This time it was a relatively simple task of changing a dimmer switch. When Rich got back to his flat after the Christimas festivities, all the bulbs in his main light fitting had blown as had the hallway light. It sounds as though there was a spike or something to have take them all out like that but unfortunately it had also blown the dimmer switch so a quick trip out to Homebase and we were sorted.
